I normally wouldn't grab anything—especially a green sequinned abaya dress—for a normal day out. But this wasn't a normal day out; it was a day when one of my best friends' sister got married. I knew my best friend and her sister from way when we were younger. And free.
(Did anyone notice all these Adele's Hello references? The title has one too. I'll be pretty sad if no one did, tbh.)
I had always thought of my best friend's sister, who is a year younger than we are, as just "my friend's sister", and that was it. I think it happens to a lot of people, right? Most people don't tend to become friends with your friend's siblings, which is weird because don't we all want a group of friends like F.R.I.E.N.D.S?

I was in Tokyo early last year when the sister planned to visit Tokyo with her friends and asked me if I could take her around. Of course I said "Of course", but then there was also the thought of "What are we going to talk about, I wonder?" She and I had hung out before and we always had fun, but my best friend was around every time.
Surprisingly to the both of us, we discovered that we get along really well. She and I spent one whole day together, going to Asakusa, Ueno, Omotesando, and Shibuya (seriously, we went to ALL FOUR places in one day), and it felt like we never did run out of things to talk about. No awkward pauses either—you know you're comfortable with someone when you feel like you don't need to fill up any silence that might ensue. Even my best friend never expected her sister and I to have as much fun as we did.
I definitely learned something from that experience: to always give a chance. Not so much to other people, but to myself, because I realise I don't take enough leaps of faith—not as much as I should. To be a little less afraid, to have a little less fear, to take one tiny step at a time. Chances are, I'll either find something new to love or discover something about myself from taking more leaps of faiths.
Or in this little story of mine, someone new to love! Since I adore my best friend's sister now, I wore this kitschy Kate Spade 'Hello Tokyo' clutch to her wedding as sort of a homage to our little rendezvous in Tokyo, because I'm kitschy like this clutch myself. I bought it way back in May last year but just could not find the perfect time to break it out of its dust bag—until this wedding, that is!
Check you out, Liyana, all glammed up in sequins and a clutch. You look amazing!! And I completely understand what you wrote, I'm always tongue-tied and awkward in social conditions with those I know, let alone someone whom has always been, in my mind, XYZ's little sister :) but you're absolutely right. Leaps of faith must be taken. How else can we know what's at the end of that leap? xoxo
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sheela!
DeleteI find that my blog is an outlet for me to express myself in ways that I find more difficult to execute in "the real world", I wonder if it's the same for you too?
I'm actually learning a lot from the written work on your blog, too - I'm all for people who are advocating positivity and love for one's self, and knowing that at the same time there's always room for self-improvement just by believing in yourself!
You have amazing style and your blog is really cool, I love your outfit posts and the photography is beautiful too :) <3
ReplyDeleteHi Sadiya,
